  • Participation in this category is for foreign nationals whose primary purpose is teaching, lecturing, observing, or consulting at post-secondary accredited academic institutions, museums, libraries, or similar types of institutions.

  • Participation in this category is foreign nationals whose primary purpose is conducting research, observing, or consulting in connection with a research project at research institutions, corporate research facilities, museums, libraries, post-secondary accredited academic institutions, or similar types of institutions.

  • Participation in this category is for professors, research scholars, or persons with similar education or accomplishments who enter the United States for a short-term visit for the purpose of lecturing, observing, consulting, training, or demonstrating special skills at research institutions, museums, libraries, post-secondary accredited academic institutions, or similar types of institutions.

  • Participation in this category is for foreign nationals who are bona fide foreign postsecondary students, who at the time of application are enrolled in and actively pursuing a degree or a full-time course of study at a foreign ministerially-recognized post-secondary academic institution and whose purpose is work and travel in the United States for up to 4 months during the break between academic years.

  • Participation in this category is for foreign nationals who are enrolled in and pursuing a degree at a post-secondary accredited academic institution outside the United States. They will participate in a student internship program in the United States that will fulfill the educational objectives for their current degree program at their home institution.

  • Participation in this category is for foreign secondary students who will study in the United States at accredited public or private secondary schools while living with an American host family.

  • Participation in this category is for a foreign national who is participating in a structured and guided work-based training program in his/her specific occupational field.

  • Participation in this category is for a foreign national with the equivalent of a U.S. Bachelor's degree in either education or related subjects he/she intends to teach and a minimum of the equivalent of two years of post-degree full-time teaching experience, who is employed as a teacher at the time of application for the program, for the purpose of teaching full-time in a primary or secondary accredited academic institution.

  • Participation in this category is for foreign nationals who are experts in a field of specialized knowledge or skills who enter the United States for the purpose of observing, consulting, or demonstrating special knowledge or skills.

  • Participation in this category is for foreign nationals who come to the United States for the purpose of residing with an American host family and participating directly in their home life, while providing limited childcare services. The au pair participant is also required to enroll in a U.S. postsecondary accredited academic institution for not less than 6 semester hours of academic credit or its equivalent.

  • Participation in this category is for foreign nationals who are selected to be counselors in summer camps in the United States.

  • Participation in this category is for foreign physicians who are graduates of a school of medicine who come to the United States under a program in which they will receive graduate medical education or training conducted by accredited U.S. schools of medicine or scientific institutions.

H-2B Program

The H-2B program allows foreign nationals to travel to the United States to fill temporary nonagricultural jobs.
